Kong: Skull Island Outgrosses Peter Jackson’s King Kong

The big ape has reached the top, and this time he didn’t have to stop. That’s because Kong: Skull Island has now grossed a monstrous $552,518,884 worldwide. This places it ahead of both the $550,517,357 worldwide total of Peter Jackson’s 2005 King Kong movie and the $529,076,069 total of the 2014 Godzilla film, for which it serves as a prequel. Whilst it’s now opened in all territories, Skull Island is still performing strongly and will add a significant amount to its haul before finishing its run.

As the second film in Warner Bros. MonsterVerse, these figures are definitely a sign that the shared universe franchise will continue for many years to come. And if the film’s end credit sequence was any indication, that’s exactly what’s going to happen. We can next look forward to Godzilla: King of the Monsters on 22 March 2019, before horror and sci-fi fans all over the world struggle to hide their nerd boners when Godzilla vs. Kong arrives on 29 May 2020. Truly a sacred day. Let’s just hope that Warner have learned from their past mistakes so it doesn’t end up being another version of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

For now, Kong is king once again.
